Minnesotans know how to treasure the warm weather months. At the first hint of spring the lakes are crowded and the shorts are out. What I love about summer is that it is a great time of year to gather friends and to entertain. Instead of making everyone sit on those uncomfortable lawn chairs, balancing a paper plate on their knee, why not create an outdoor living space?
Here are a few simple tips for making a comfortable and functional outdoor room to enjoy all season long.
1. Create a Sense of Place
Elements such as screens, drapery, plants walls, pergolas and awnings can create a sense of place without taking away from the fact that you are outdoors. These elements can also have added benefit of providing shade and privacy.
2. Mix it Up
Provide guests with a variety of seating types and arrangements to allow for a range of activities. Depending on the amount of space you have, consider having furniture that allows for sitting, lounging, visiting, and eating. Many of today’s outdoor furniture manufacturers offer full product suites to suit the many ways you could utilize your outdoor room. Below are pieces from the Kingsley Bate Amalfi Collection.
3. Choose Furniture and Fabric Materials Wisely
While the space must look great, it also needs to stand up to the outdoor elements for years to come. Janus et Cie has developed a new product for their furniture frames called JANUSfiber. This proprietary handwoven fabric is resistant to ultraviolet light, impervious to moisture and bacteria, and virtually maintenance-free. The images below feature the Quinta and Pacific Collections.
You will also want to choose fabrics that are made specifically for outdoor use. Fabrics made of solution-dyed acrylic will resist spills, fading, you name it! Pindler & Pindler recently introduced the Exclusive Licensed Indoor / Outdoor Hearst Castle® Collection. Transitional designs in fresh vibrant color combinations, woven with 100% solution dyed Sunbrella® yarns, make this collection appropriate for a broad range of applications.
4. Have Fun!
This is the most important one. Outdoor dining is supposed to feel more relaxed. So, if you burn the burgers, don’t worry about it. Pass the wine, let the guests linger, and enjoy the atmosphere.
